42:20.19
Keeper Catran-Whitney
All right I Well in that you really can't fix these things. You know you can't go back and fix something like that. What you can do is try to make things.

42:24.78
Bruce Anthony
Bringing them back in. But you said you fixed it.

42:30.87
Bruce Anthony
A.

42:39.35

42:39.86
Keeper Catran-Whitney
Better but you can that that the damage has been done So shortly after.

42:56.85
Keeper Catran-Whitney
The way. Ah I had gone to my wife and and and told her said look I got to go back to the house. Ah this weekend and she asked is everything okay and I said.

43:10.31
Bruce Anthony
A.

43:14.49
Keeper Catran-Whitney
It will be ah so I go back to the house and I have determined 1 of 2 things was about to happen one of the 2 of us was not going to survive the weekend and I was with it if it was me I was good.

43:27.47
Bruce Anthony
A a.

43:33.65
Keeper Catran-Whitney
So I went back to the house. There was an upstairs. There are 2 bedrooms upstairs. It's my mom and his because he my mom had him at the house. The bedroom was upstairs and the one that I had left prior to after getting married was still there. So I went back there and i.

43:41.41
Bruce Anthony
The.

43:49.77
Keeper Catran-Whitney
Paced around in that bedroom for 2 hours waiting to hear him come out the bedroom I had determined that I was going to kill him and what's crazy Bruce is I did not tell anybody.

44:00.41
Bruce Anthony
Are a.

44:05.93
Keeper Catran-Whitney
I Didn't tell my fiance what I was about to do I didn't tell my brothers I told no one and in looking back at it if I had killed him I. Would have made the situation worse for my sisters emotionally because they really would have blamed themselves they would have said you know what I should have said anything because now my brother's in Jail for a first degree murder or he's been killed. But I think him like that. Yeah yeah, yeah.

44:27.78
Bruce Anthony
E.

44:33.71
Bruce Anthony
Yeah, it would have destroyed a lot of lives. It would destroyed a lot of lives. It would have destroyed your sisters his life your life.

44:40.59
Keeper Catran-Whitney
And and that's the challenge for sister. Yeah, that's the challenge for sisters. The reason why they don't tell their brothers is is because they know their brothers at some point is probably one of them is going to rise up and do something and it's not going to be pretty. These are not kids in elementary school. These are grown men.

44:52.76
Bruce Anthony
E.

45:00.80
Keeper Catran-Whitney
Play for life or death. So I went to the house and I'm sweating I am shivering I'm so cold I am nervous I'm scared up knowing what I have to do outside.

45:00.19
Bruce Anthony
Um, yeah.

45:18.50
Keeper Catran-Whitney
My bedroom door is a long hallway but there is a three and a half foot wall that overlooks the spiral staircase and I had determined that. Okay. When he comes out of the bedroom I'm going to meet him in the hall. But the 1 place I cannot be is my back against that short wall cannot be there because all he has to do is push and I'm troubling over snapping right.

45:36.36
Bruce Anthony
A.

45:43.10
Bruce Anthony
And what and your' you're how old at this time if it's 86 you're almost thirty years old

45:52.97
Bruce Anthony

Bruce Anthony
Okay, um.

46:08.26
Bruce Anthony
Here? yeah.

46:13.93
Keeper Catran-Whitney
And that's just another thing I have to deal with the weight and the size of this guy. He outweighs me by a hundred pounds I cannot look over his shoulder. That's how much bigger than me he was so as people was like I said earlier? Oh I would have ah no, not.

46:19.42
Bruce Anthony
Via.

46:31.29
Keeper Catran-Whitney
You you got to think about some things first got some calculations to make first. Yeah, yeah, yeah, he's a mountain of a man. So like I said that's noise that's all I'm hearing so.

46:32.50
Bruce Anthony
Yeah, you say 6 6 two fifty I mean yeah, it's yeah, that's that's that's a that's a big man.

46:44.26
Bruce Anthony
A.

46:48.93
Keeper Catran-Whitney
I hear the bedroom door open and I said to myself. Okay, it's time the instrument of his death was already in my bedroom is leaning against my bedroom door jam. It was my favorite baseball bat I had many home runs at Fox Hills park Ted Bat I knew how to hit that bat. It was like it was made for my hands. He comes out the bedroom and I put my hand on the knob of the bat and then I take it off and say no now it's not now so he comes out of the bedroom.

47:09.23
Bruce Anthony
A.

47:25.77
Keeper Catran-Whitney
And I opened the door and I'd look and I said okay you can turn back if you want to but I decide to step out Anyway, he starts coming down the hall and I meet him halfway.

47:40.61
Bruce Anthony
Are right.

47:43.40
Keeper Catran-Whitney
God damn if my back is not against that short wall place I am not supposed to be I'm supposed to be on the other side of the wall of the hallway where the wall it's glass because it overlooks a patio but I'm not going to drop. Fifty Fifteen feet and I realize I am standing with my back against the short wall Bruce I am scared if I meet him at my door. My door is at the landing of the stairs. So.

48:00.62
Bruce Anthony
E.

48:09.23
Bruce Anthony
E.

48:19.14
Keeper Catran-Whitney
All they had to do is push and I go tumbling down the stairs backwards and I snap my neck but I had already decided my life was forfeit I was ready to give it up for my sisters is done as long as he is out of this house for good. So.

48:21.60
Bruce Anthony
A e.

48:36.50
Keeper Catran-Whitney
As I'm approaching him. He says hey and I just look and we get closer and closer and I see his face just start to drop from and we meet in the middle. My face is in his chest.

48:48.91
Bruce Anthony
E.

48:54.16
Keeper Catran-Whitney
That's how much bigger than me he was I mean as far as I'm concerned. He's blocking out all the light. At this point we are literally face to chest and I look up at him and I say you have 24 hours to leave this house.

48:55.50
Bruce Anthony
E.A.

49:11.54
Keeper Catran-Whitney
Because if you are still here by this time tomorrow. You will be dead because I will have killed you.

49:20.60
Keeper Catran-Whitney
I turned around and walked away and I hear footsteps behind me and I'm like damn okay I go into the bedroom and I close the door but I still hit.

49:23.15
Bruce Anthony
E.

49:39.24
Keeper Catran-Whitney
Hear footsteps but they're fading. He was walking back the other way I'm like okay I hear the door close I walk out of the bedroom go downstairs.

49:44.56
Bruce Anthony
Here.

49:57.67
Keeper Catran-Whitney
Get into my little piat X One nine and drive over to ah you know to to the house and my wife she says is everything okay and I said I think so. Because I know I have to go back tomorrow to double check I have make sure the job job is done So The morning comes around and I get back in the car and I drive back over and I take my bat with me and walk up to the front of the house and I decide to leave the bat outside.

50:17.61
Bruce Anthony
Um, this year

50:34.20
Keeper Catran-Whitney
Resting against the door ja now Bruce I'm expecting to walk in the house and there's a gun pointed at me like okay because if he kills me, he's going to jail for murder he's out the house if I get him. He's dead.

50:46.93
Bruce Anthony
E E e.

50:53.29
Keeper Catran-Whitney
I'm going to Jail for murder. But at least he's out the house So like it early I made the situation worse for my sisters emotionally but it had to be done So I walk in the house. There's not a sound I walk upstairs I don't see anyone to hear anything I walk into the kitchen.

50:54.79
Bruce Anthony
Is that the house. Yeah. E.

51:12.40
Keeper Catran-Whitney
Don't see any 1 or hear anything but I do hear some music coming out the back room. We had a makeshift studio back there and I walked back there my younger brothers back there and I said was anyone in the house. He said no I said well where do you go? He said he left this morning and that was the end of him.

51:28.94
Bruce Anthony
Um, ah.

51:31.34
Keeper Catran-Whitney
That day he and I how the story ends is pretty dramatic um 2019 I decide to.

51:31.51
Bruce Anthony
That day.

51:49.62
Keeper Catran-Whitney
And all of this and morere is in the book. You know this is a brother's story. It's not a sister's story. 1 of my sisters. You know who I was told that I want to write the book and they said you must write the book. It's not my story. It's not as girl who shoot boy story people need to know what brothers go through so 2019 Bruce I decide. Okay, let me see if this fool has a Facebook page because what sexual predator is going to have a Facebook page.

52:06.84
Bruce Anthony
And.

52:20.61
Bruce Anthony
Now from 1986 when you told him to leave the house to 2019 was there any contact. No okay, okay.

52:22.74
Keeper Catran-Whitney
For.

52:32.12
Keeper Catran-Whitney
No, but every now and then we wanted to see if he was still around so we would you know, um every now and then someone would say you know I saw so and so and and or I saw him over here were like okay, cool. Ah right, fine. But I knew my sisters needed some closure.

52:47.54
Bruce Anthony
E.

52:50.70
Keeper Catran-Whitney
Because stink still worked sadly with me and was settling well with me and so I looked on Facebook and damn he had a Facebook page and he decided to make a public post about his wife who had passed away in. December they had the funeral but he wanted to have a going home party so they had he stayed turns out he stayed 10 minutes from us from where I live right now is that it's a way.

53:14.70
Bruce Anthony
Okay. He a.

53:25.56
Keeper Catran-Whitney
So he decided to have this going home party at a church in Van Eyes and I'm looking at the post and he's just inviting people to come so bigger. Oh shit, he just invited me. Oh yeah.

53:42.74
Bruce Anthony
That's not key for that is not what he did that is not what he did So okay.

53:45.25
Keeper Catran-Whitney
Yes, he did as far as I'm concerned is Providence Yes, you put out a public post you invite people you invited me to come I am gone I told my older brother I said you come in with me because I am going he will see me.

53:55.70
Bruce Anthony
Okay, all right.

54:03.19
Keeper Catran-Whitney
Day received me on that day. Talk. My little brother had to come it back 1 my sister said you need to go with him because he gonna put hands on that man I'm not putting hands on anybody but I understand what you'all saying? okay. We go to the church and I'm just gonna make this really quick. We get to the church is packed with black people this church in band I just got this big large white pastor and he's like the first time you had this meet black people in his church in his life. He's just so thrilled. He just walking around like oh this is great. This is great.

54:17.50
Bruce Anthony
Um.

54:33.98
Keeper Catran-Whitney
He stopped to stoped at this 1 person at the back of the and he said in this spectacular this is wonderful I look can you just feel the love and then in if in this church and I look up at him and I said yeah I feel the love of all the people he could ask he said.

54:50.38
Bruce Anthony
E.

54:52.93
Keeper Catran-Whitney
Me He talked to no one else. So I'm thinking God talking God sent me here to handle this give my sisters closure so they have their service. It's really nice lot of nice words about.

54:59.30
Bruce Anthony
Here.

55:09.67
Keeper Catran-Whitney
The woman who passed away a lot of her family and kids and grandkids and I'm back there thinking? Okay, how many of these kids did he get to so after the church is over after the service is over I get up and I get in the receiving line. He's sitting in a metal folding chair at the front.

55:16.80
Bruce Anthony
E.

55:28.29
Keeper Catran-Whitney
Greeting everyone I step in front of him now the roles have been reversed from the moment from that moment in the hallway where he's looking down at me and I'm looking up at him now he is looking up at me and I'm looking down at him and I say bra da da da I say his name.

55:37.81
Bruce Anthony
E.

55:47.80
Keeper Catran-Whitney
Your day of reckoning has finally arrived. You will never have a so you will never have a restful day in your in your life I take over the church for 90 minutes he is mine for 90 minutes and what happened in that church.

55:59.90
Bruce Anthony
A.

56:06.20
Keeper Catran-Whitney
When I took over.

56:11.36
Keeper Catran-Whitney
You could' have written it in Hollywood youd say it never would happened like this but at me and my brother were finally leave me and I I don't know why I did this but it was my seay moment in the color purple I spun around and pointed at him. It's your day is over.

56:17.27
Bruce Anthony
A.

56:31.33
Keeper Catran-Whitney
And I'm just going over and on and on and on and on and on and we turn around and we walk out to church and I leave him standing there. We're driving out of the parking lot and I pull onto a street called Orion. And all I hear is hey I look at my older brother said. Did you hear that he said yeah someone calling us I don't think so so I'm still driving but I'm driving slow you know I'm just we're so thrilled about what we just did for our sisters hey i.

57:05.36
Bruce Anthony
A.

57:09.60
Keeper Catran-Whitney
Stop this young woman about 21 years old she's in a very tight nice looking dress. She's running across the grass. She hits the sidewa god click like Likela I I click. Runs onto the Assphalt street like she says I heard what you said in there I need to talk to you. I said. Okay, she said the woman who passed her passed away was my grandmother I need to talk to you about something gave her my cell number said called any time after she walked away I looked around the brother.

57:46.30
Bruce Anthony
A.

57:56.79
Keeper Catran-Whitney
He got to her didn't he I think he did so what ends up happening Bruce when people are silent who who know aunts uncles who passed the buck grandparents who passed the buck people. We went to. Past a but you end up becoming part of that spider's protective detail. He's sitting in the middle of this web and he's feeding on every one who knows and who did nothing. You are now part of the story in a way you should never have ever been.

58:33.31
Bruce Anthony
M.

58:34.60
Keeper Catran-Whitney
You know what happened and you remain silent for my Aunt's Uncles they were hoping we were going to be rich and as more people knew they did nothing. You're not protecting yourself. You ultimately are protecting the person who molested the children.

58:52.47
Bruce Anthony
There.

58:54.50
Keeper Catran-Whitney
And it happened all the time in the United States it is reported that 165 children a day are sexually abused. Those are ones reported last night around one o'clock someone walked into some little kid's bedroom and had their way with them.

59:02.18
Bruce Anthony
Here.

59:13.80
Keeper Catran-Whitney
Tonight it's going to happen again and tomorrow night it will repeat itself and there are those people who know and who will remain silent. There's too much at risk here to remain silent.

59:28.17
Bruce Anthony
A.

59:31.90
Keeper Catran-Whitney
And to keep brothers out of a conversation that they should be a part of especially when we are blamed for not doing anything you want us to not be a part of the conversation. But then we're blamed for not doing anything. Granted, it took me a long time.

59:38.73
Bruce Anthony
Here.

59:49.80
Keeper Catran-Whitney
But what ends up happening is Brothers and sisters can end up becoming enemies when they should be allies in conversation. We should be able to come to each other and help each other and explain what's what's what's going on.

59:58.69
Bruce Anthony
Year.

01:00:08.96
Keeper Catran-Whitney
From the time it happens but you know like I said I understand why my sister said what she said she's trying to protect herself which she needed to do and she needed to protect my sisters but the brothers and our emotions can't be shunted to the side. We are not travelers.

01:00:14.90
Bruce Anthony
E.

01:00:27.80
Keeper Catran-Whitney
Um, in in trauma who are just expected to just cope with it. We can't we need someone to talk to there needs to be systems and tools in place for Brothers and that's ultimately what this three book series is about.

01:00:34.93
Bruce Anthony
There.

01:00:46.52
Keeper Catran-Whitney
Hopefulness I get into those people places and things those anchors that help pull me out turns out what help pull me out in the end was my sisters 45 years are not um I just decided I have got to talk and they were open with.

01:00:58.69
Bruce Anthony
Um, yeah.

01:01:03.46
Keeper Catran-Whitney
And happiness is about my life right now do I still struggle with the trauma do things still trigger. Yeah, but I'm in a much better place and ultimately Bruce and for me it boils down to this. There was a time where I thought our family's message was to bring music to the world. That's not what I think anymore I think we were put on this planet. The 10 of us to go through this so that. Our experience can be used to educate to heal to inform it crosses racial lines it crosses gender lines it crosses education it crosses politics it crosses law enforcement. It crosses clinical. You can take a look at what we went through and get a very deep dive into what really happens with families and you could take deeper dive into what really happens with brothers.

01:02:03.90
Bruce Anthony
A.

01:02:10.90
Bruce Anthony
Um, I so I have 2 final questions. 1 question is personal but we've been getting really personal. When you decided to write the book and tell the story that for so long your sisters wanted to not discuss. How did the family handle. It.

01:02:38.21
Keeper Catran-Whitney
Man.

01:02:44.47
Keeper Catran-Whitney
In 2013 I went to a conference in San Diego put on by the great motivational speaker and author Lisa Nichols she was putting on a conference and part of the conference was how to write a book in 20 minutes at that time I was really big in the industry of network marketing direct sales kind of like amway mary cave on all that kind of stuff I was very big in that and I knew the book I wanted to write was about that but I was being emotionally pulled to write.

01:03:19.98
Bruce Anthony
To write your store. Yeah.

01:03:22.13
Keeper Catran-Whitney
Helplessness and yet I knew I could not write this book without talking to my sisters I couldn't write it. It feel good about it. Sure I could write it but I would good about at least letting them know.

01:03:27.80
Bruce Anthony
A.

01:03:36.36
Bruce Anthony
Um, right.

01:03:40.31
Keeper Catran-Whitney
That I'm writing about it because it is my story and they could write their own story. But what I ended up doing my second sister I called her and said look I want to talk to you about something that I want to do. This was after a month of picking up the phone and didn't putting it down because the damn thing was too heavy I did not want to talk I'd pick up the phone I'd say you know what I got something to do right now more important I need to go watch paint dry.

01:04:00.52
Bruce Anthony
Um, the.

01:04:10.80
Bruce Anthony
Anything to avoid that year

01:04:12.30
Keeper Catran-Whitney
I Need to go more. You know what? I'm saying you know we've all been in those moments but I eventually picked up the phone and I called her and said look I need to talk to you about something I want to write when she said come on over got to her house. And we're standing outside the front of her garage and I'm in tears saying how I want to write this book from a brother's perspective but I want you to know that I am not writing this to throw. Anyone under the bus or to point fingers. But I want to tell people what's going on and how our story doesn't have to end in tragedy. It could be used as a healing tool. That's my thing.

01:04:59.70
Bruce Anthony
Oh.

01:05:02.68
Keeper Catran-Whitney
Our family story does not have to end in tragedy and how it does it in the tragedy is being put to good use to help other children other families other brothers and sisters heal and so I'm in tears Bruce I am an absolute mess and she looks at me and puts her head on my shoulder. It's okay, you should write this. Book it was the last thing I was expecting she said you should write this book. It's not my story. It's not as girl story. It's your story I said are you sure she said yes I called my oldest sister the one who said you can't talk about it.

She said after reading the book she said I had no idea you boys were carrying all this trauma. I thought you boys didn't talk about it because you didn't care I idea you guys have been dealing with this I said we talk about it because you said we couldn't so after going to the conference in said Diego.

By women. He said I had no idea this is what my brother was going to do I had no idea my brother's been care I had no idea we need to hear your story. You need to share this with brothers. My brother needs to read this book. My brother needs to know. He's not alone. It was just too much so I got up out of my seat.

Went to the double doors and I was out in the hall 5 seconds later the doors burst open and more women surrounded me telling me about their brothers but the 3 that really stood out were the women who said their brothers took their lives once they learned that this.

They'd been sexually abused and they took their lives out of guilt and shame because they weren't there to protect them because we couldn't have the conversation. So there's there's a lot here to unpack with this particular.

01:07:37.95
Bruce Anthony
Are.

01:07:51.43
Keeper Catran-Whitney
Conversation you and I are having and and I gotta say thanks for giving me the time because this is not an easy topic for men to talk about and a lot of it's just due to what we have done.

01:08:02.59
Bruce Anthony
No, it isn't.

01:08:10.36
Keeper Catran-Whitney
Not you and I But what we as a gender have done to women and there is a lot of people carrying stuff I don't want anyone to know so I don't want to talk about it. But I've spoken to so many men who have said you need to.

01:08:12.95
Bruce Anthony
Oh.

01:08:26.67
Keeper Catran-Whitney
Talk about this. We need to have some some place to go. We need to learn more about your book. It is I think it's a brave thing that you are doing having me on here I Really do. Because there's going to be some pushback in and one of the reasons why I brought up why I was sexually abused is oftentimes I start telling women about the story. They said no, you can't talk about it I'm like how come I talk about I'm a brother.. It's my story said it didn't happen to you.

01:08:53.70
Bruce Anthony
E.

01:08:58.73
Keeper Catran-Whitney
Said it did happen to me. It may not have happened in the way that happened to my sisters but it happened to me and then I said oh by the way six years before my sisters were sexually abused my babysitter sexually abused me almost daily for six months and to a woman they said oh I didn't know. Oh so you do understand? Yeah I understand because it's not just little It's not just girls who get sexual abuse 1 in 6 sexual abuse victims are boys so that that narrative that is.

Primarily being controlled by women and it should be is one that can be expanded to include Brothers and men who want to be allies who want to help who want to assist women and also. Help women understand that we go through these things too. Just Society is really not created the space for men to just be emotional like we should and I'm like I don't care because once I started talking about this the shackles of shame and guilt. Ah, this really started to fall Away. It's liberating. To talk to someone about this. It really is you know you are locked down emotionally when you don't talk about it. Especially if you're a man. Oh My goodness.

I want to once again thankkeeper for this incredible emotional heart wrenching and heartwarming interview remember folks his book is called helplessness the mental health challenges brothers experience once we learn our sister. Have been sexually abused by our parents. You can get that on Amazon look in the descriptions of both the audio and video podcast I have all of his information whether it's his website his Youtube channel or where you can get the book his Instagram all that stuff is down in the details and I I want to take a step back. And thank you for riding along with this incredible interview I don't know that I've interviewed anybody that has a story I haven't interviewed anybody that has a story like this I don't know if I have interviewed anybody that has a story. Heart wrenching. There have been some people out there that I've interviewed that really has some really heart wrenching stories. But this one from you know, keeper's childhood going back to it when he was molested and then the struggles of just try and survive in l a. Um, ice cubes it trying to survive a south central I don't know if they were in south central but they were in l a trying to survive being entertainers and then at 16 17 years old finding out what this huge family secret is and coming to grips with that. Um and spending.

02:41.39
Brucce Anthony
The majority of his young adult life filling that regret and that shame and then finally coming to grips with it and writing this book and even have the sisters participate in it and kind of bringing the majority. Ah, the siblings back together. This is a really incredible overarching story of pain tragedy and in Triumph and I can't stress enough how grateful I am for keeper to come on the show and tell us about his life tell us about the struggles. Tell us about his triumphs. Um, you know anytime I have guests on the show I'm always trying to open the audience's eyes to something that's a unique perspective. Um something that they may not know is out there in the world something that they've heard about but don't. Have any firsthand experience with I feel like the only way that we can grow as human beings are really really truly listening to each other and hearing everybody else's unique story I always give the analogy 2 people can walk in the woods they can walk in the exact. Same path in the exact same steps and experience completely different journeys and sometimes people don't get what I'm saying but with each person having different personalities.

04:09.96
Brucce Anthony
Um, in that journey in that walk in that path even though they're taking the same path and they're in the same footsteps they may turn left and see a tree another person may turn left and see a robin in that tree where the other person didn't see the robin in the trees. The details in life that. Other people see things differently and can explain things differently to us and we can all learn from it and grow. That's what this podcast is really all about to hear keeper story in I understand that things like this happen right? And like there is a history of. Parents abusing their children fathers abusing their daughters mothers abusing their daughters mothers abusing their sons fathers abusing their sons and nephews and nieces and so on and so on and so on but I've never heard firsthand and experience. Like this and I know throughout the majority of the interview. You guys will have noticed that I had to just take breaks because it was so much overwhelming emotional information that we were consuming in 1 time that you just had to take a break. Catch your breath because it was so overwhelming and so powerful and that's the reason why I have this show I will never stop doing these type type of interviews I will always.

05:41.85
Brucce Anthony
Always give you a warning beforehand and what's to come but these type of interviews are so so very important because if you don't know anybody that's experienced it in your personal Life. You can at least come to this show and hear it firsthand. From a person that has experienced of a wide a wide variety of different things and that's what I try to do on this show and so thank you again for keeper look out for his other books hopefulness and um, helpfulness. Um. They were all they're all in his details. So go to his website go by Hopelessness. That's book 1 Book 2 and book 3 are coming out soon. Um I Want to thank you for taking this journey with me I appreciate you listening. Appreciate you watching and until next time as always our holler.
